Our Story
A 23-year journey connecting artisans and design lovers worldwide
James Compton's Journey
In 2002, James Compton fell in love with Morocco. Not just the tourism, the postcard views—but the soul of it. The mountains, the people, the centuries-old craft traditions. Within months of his first visit, he made a decision that would shape the next 23 years of his life: he moved to Marrakech.
What began as a personal passion transformed into something profound. James spent years building genuine relationships with weaving families across the Atlas Mountains, learning their techniques, understanding their stories, and earning their trust. Today, those connections span over 200 families—each one a direct partnership built on respect and fair compensation.
The Atlas Knot exists because James recognized something fundamental: the world's most beautiful handwoven rugs were being undervalued. Weavers were receiving pennies while middlemen captured the margins. Design-conscious buyers were paying inflated prices for questionable authenticity. There had to be a better way.
What We Stand For
Years in Morocco
Living in Marrakech, building relationships, understanding craft traditions.
Weaving Families
Direct partnerships across the Atlas Mountains, no intermediaries.
Middlemen
We connect directly. Fair prices for artisans, authentic rugs for you.
Why Direct Sourcing Matters
For Weavers
When you buy from The Atlas Knot, your money reaches the families who created the rug. No middlemen diluting compensation. Fair prices that respect the months of skilled labor these artists pour into every piece.
For You
Authenticity guaranteed. Every rug's story—its family, its techniques, its region—is known and verifiable. You're not buying a generic "Moroccan rug." You're buying something with provenance, crafted by hands you could trace.
For Craft
When artisans earn fairly, they stay in their craft. They teach their children. Traditions survive. The weaving heritage of the Atlas Mountains strengthens rather than disappears into tourism and commodity trading.
Life in Marrakech
James's home is where The Atlas Knot begins. Marrakech isn't just a base—it's the heart of our operation. From here, James works directly with weaving families in the surrounding Atlas Mountains, curates each collection, and ensures every rug meets our standards for quality and authenticity.
The medina's rhythm shapes our rhythm. The seasons of production, the timing of harvests, the weaving calendars—we work with these natural cycles, not against them. This isn't efficient in a corporate sense, but it's right. It honors the craft and the people who practice it.
When you buy from The Atlas Knot, you're buying into a way of life that exists in the mountains, valleys, and villages surrounding this ancient city.
